Prophet, Priest, and King – The Wilderness

In the wilderness we see Moses commissioned as prophet, priest, and judge to a nation of more than 2 million people. We see in Moses a picture of Christ who would come to perfectly fulfill the roles of Prophet, Priest, and King. In the wilderness we also see the people as a picture of the church (and of ourselves individually) in their triumphs and failings.

Below you will find video recordings of the lessons and handouts showing the basic outline as well as the scriptures referenced.

Lesson 1 – Call of Moses – God’s Call – At the burning bush God reveals Himself to a reluctant Moses. God calls him to be prophet, priest, and judge of the nation of Israel and to lead them out of their captivity in Egypt.

Lesson 2 – Moses and Pharaoh – God’s Sovereignty – Moses takes on the roles of prophet as he gives the king of Egypt God’s command to release His people. God hardens Pharaoh’s heart and He demonstrates His sovereignty through the actions of Moses and Pharaoh to bring about His will. This sovereignty culminates in God passing over His people while destroying the firstborn of Egypt in the Passover.

Lesson 3 – Exodus – God’s Power – God demonstrates His power in the parting of the Red Sea and the destruction of the Egyptian army. The people see God’s power and worship through song.

Lesson 4 – Sinai – God’s Holiness – God’s Holiness is on full display as He descends on Sinai in smoke, fire, earthquakes, and trumpets. As God’s chosen people come out to meet Him, He establishes a new covenant with them and gives them a taste of the Promised Land where He will dwell with them.

Lesson 5 – The Golden Calf – God’s Wrath – With Moses up on Sinai receiving the Law from God, the people down below quickly turn aside from God and begin worshipping a golden calf. God’s wrath is revealed as He proclaims a harsh discipline for their unfaithfulness. Moses, acting as priest, mediates between God and the people and God agrees to continue on with them to the Promised Land.

Lesson 6 – The Law and the Tabernacle – God’s Standard – In the Law we see God’s standard by which we are to live, taking special note of the portions of the Law that apply to us as Christians. In the tabernacle we see God’s redemptive plan for when we inevitably fail to live up to His standard. The tabernacle and sacrificial system are pictures of the redemption offered through the blood of Christ.

Lesson 7 – Promised Land, Take 1 – God’s Challenge – Having constructed the tabernacle and implemented the sacrificial system, the people now set out for the land that God has promised them. God’s challenge to the people is to trust in the One who brought them from slavery and preserved them in the wilderness. The people are afraid of the inhabitants of the Promised Land and say they want to return to Egypt.

Lesson 8 – Wandering – God’s Discipline – After refusing the enter, God proclaims a harsh discpline: the men who were afraid to fight the people of the land will now die in the wilderness as the people are condemned to wander in the wilderness for 40 years.

Lesson 9 – Plains of Moab – God’s Second Chance – The people (minus those who refused to enter the Promised Land) settle on the Plains of Moab across from Jericho. There God gives them a second chance to follow Him. Moses recounts the events of the last 40 years and gives a second telling of the Law. Ultimately, Moses dies having only seen the Promised Land from a distance.

Lesson 10 – Promised Land, Take 2 – God’s Provision – Under the new leadership of Joshua, the people enter the Promised Land. Joshua sees God’s provision as He causes the people to revere him as they did Moses. The people immediately see God’s provision as the walled city of Jericho is miraculously laid open for them.
